Description

These little insects are ancestral - they have anatomical features that remarkably resemble fossil species. They have no wings, and the mouthparts are rudimentary (Archaeos = ancient, gnathos = mouth). They're also covered in scales, like the much more derived Lepidoptera, but they're flat, thin, simple scales (unlike butterfly scales that have grooves, ridges and the like).

Found on a tree during a midnight hike.

That's a beautiful picture of a bristletail. I'll have to correct you about the scales though... I've done SEM work on this group, and their scales are pretty incredible. Here's one of my pictures.

If you ever get the chance, I would love some specimens of those too. So little is known about them, and anything helps.
